A Just Transition FAQs

What is decarbonisation?

These are actions taken by an organisation, industry, business, government etc. to reduce and eliminate carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

What are Green Jobs?

These are jobs that directly contribute to – or indirectly supports – reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preserving or restoring environmental quality, while also meeting longstanding demands and goals of the labour movement, such as adequate wages, safe working conditions and workers’ rights.

What are Green Skills?

This is about having the knowledge, abilities, values and attitudes needed to live in, develop and support a sustainable and resource-efficient society.

What is a low-carbon economy?

This is a type of economy that causes low levels of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions like carbon dioxide (CO2) compared to the current carbon-intensive economy (based on fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas). A low-carbon economy is based on low energy consumption and low pollution.

What is meant by ‘low-carbon’ or ‘green’ sector?

This is an area of employment causing or resulting in only a relatively small net release of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere (i.e., it is low-carbon). Examples include sectors across the ‘Low Carbon and Renewable Energy Economy’ (such as offshore wind, low-carbon financial and advisory services, and low-emission vehicles and infrastructure) and also relatively ‘low-carbon’ sectors across the ‘Care Economy’ (spanning health and education).
